Nanban- A quick review

Pluses:-

1. A Scene by scene remake of 3 idiots. Just what the doctor ordered.

2. Vijay is back on track finally. Though he couldn't match Aamir's performance, his conscious effort is highly appreciated. Hope he signs up such roles in future as well.

3. Jiva has done justice to the role. He has never tried to take the thunder away from Vijay in-spite of him being capable of that. Deserves kudos.

4. Srikanth stands a silent winner. He looks smart and handsome throughout the movie. Though not much to act, his fresh looks and controlled acting is sure to evoke interest among directors like Maniratnam.

5. Dialogues stand out. The comedy tracks which play with words in Hindi have been effortlessly recreated in Tamil.

Minuses:-

1. The music is ordinary. Especially the "nalla nanban" which is more a BGM as opposed to the Power packed song in the Hindi version (Jaane nahi denge tujhe).

2. Satyaraj's and Satyan's roles have left much to be desired. The otherwise talented actors fall short in this movie because of the need to imitate the ever natural Boman and the sensational Omi. Especially, their English accent is a big let down. I wonder if Prakash Raj would have been a better choice for Boman's role. Else, Shankar could have tweaked the roles of both to suit them better.

3. The "irukkaana" song is needless and dampens the flow. I don't know why Shankar does this time and again. He had one in Sivaji with "Ballaelaika", followed it up with a "Kilimanjaro" in Enthiran and now, this.

4. A definite Shankar's touch is absent. I wouldn't say "missing" as it is not required for this movie. But, avid fans of Shankar who have already watched 3 idiots might get disappointed with this sincere remake.

Verdict:-

This movie is a definite treat to all the tamil film goers who have not watched 3 idiots. Its a must watch! That's the very purpose of a big director like Shankar going for a faithful remake. Also, Vijay fans can afford to smile once again. Your hero is back in reckoning. Good times are in store.

Suggestion:-

People who've watched 3 idiots (with proper understanding of the whole movie) need not take pains watching this. They can watch 3 idiots one more time

@Sankar, nice review da, but regarding satyaraj he could not do much as his natural acting skills are curtailed.
